Rockers Review
1. How does the main character, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, compare to the other main characters (Ivan Martin and Derrick Thompson) in the first two films we saw?
Horsemouth just like Derrick would be considered heroes, while Ivan would be considered an antihero. Horsemouth experiences injustice from the mafia when they steal his motorcycle and rounds up his friends to steal from the mafia and give what they steal to the community. Meanwhile, Derrick fights for his dream and in doing so, he also shows his community that the dons were bad and were hurting the community. But then there is Ivan who fights for what he wants, but hurts others in doing so. But to be honest, I think I admire Derrick the most since he was the least sexist and he was the nicest.
2. Did you like or dislike the film? Why/Why Not?
In class, I said that I didn't really like this film, but I thought that it was important to show it. However, after watching it again yesterday I learned to appreciate the film. I like that the fourth wall is broken by Horsemouth and of course I love the Robin Hood act of him and his friends. Although the director had no connection to Jamaican politics, I think it was there was a general sentiment of redistribution of wealth thanks to the Manley government. The acting may not have been the best, but we have to remember that most of the actors and actresses were not professional since this film started out as a documentary of the Rastafari.
3. In conclusion to our Jamaican film unit, which was your favorite film of all 3? Why?
To be honest, I don't think I could choose just one of the films. I think all 3 contribute to this unit (obviously that is why I chose them haha) because The Harder They Come and Rockers are such classics and in some ways complement each other. Both are about the reggae music industry in Jamaica and show class struggle in 1970's Jamaica. Meanwhile, Ghett'a Life is a good contemporary Jamaican Film that has a good message and shows a part of Jamaican history even though it may not be the most original film.

Darreck was the youngest, so maybe he is not "contaminated" with things like sexism, revenge or bad intentions !
ResponderBorrarI don't think that Horsemouth is a hero, for me is more like a leader that encourages the community to take action over the abusive people in the power.
ResponderBorrarBut yeah, i really like Derrick as a character full of will to meet his goals overcoming violence and gangs, he is better character than Horsemouth.
Thanks for u review!
I love the reasons why you like Derrick the most as character, so sweet <3
ResponderBorrarI thought that the acting was at the same time one of the worst and best parts of the movie. Whenever the characters are just hanging out and talking about anything else that doesnt have to do with the plot, i felt like they were so engaging to watch, the way they talk and move is just so fluid.
ResponderBorrarI appreciate how all the films connect in some way with the political divide in jamaica, all the main characters in all of the films come from a low social background and their situation determines how they act.
