The Grenada Revolution Documentary

1. What is the importance of the Grenada Revolution and its influence in the Caribbean? The Grenada Revolution was the first and only revolution in the English-speaking Caribbean.  Its short and bold experience left a mark in the Caribbean.  As we saw in the documentary, within its 4 shorts years it did more than 100 years of British colonialism!  It also inspired people throughout the world, as Maurice Bishop said "we have a dangerous appeal to the millions of black Americans" in the USA. This is because it was an English-speaking and black revolution! 2. Thinking of the poems and what you saw in the documentary, how did postcolonial identity change in Grenada? Grenadians became really proud of who they were and of the new society they were creating. It was a real change because it was no longer the elites in power, but the people. In fact, the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) was considered a workers and farmers government and in practice we could see ...

1. How does the main character, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, compare to the other main characters (Ivan Martin and Derrick Thompson) in the first two films we saw? Horsemouth  just like Derrick would be considered heroes, while Ivan would be considered an antihero. Horsemouth experiences injustice from the mafia when they steal his motorcycle and rounds up his friends to steal from the mafia and give what they steal to the community. Meanwhile, Derrick fights for his dream and in doing so, he also shows his community that the dons were bad and were hurting the community. But then there is Ivan who fights for what he wants, but hurts others in doing so. But to be honest, I think I admire Derrick the most since he was the least sexist and he was the nicest. 2. Did you like or dislike the film? Why/Why Not? In class, I said that I didn't really like this film, but I thought that it was important to show it. However, after watching it again yesterday I learned to a...

1. Who was your favorite character (s) from the film? Why? My favorite characters from the film are: Derrick and Dawn Thompson. I really admire Derrick's perseverance and his fight to become the best boxer in Jamaica. But also I like how he realizes how the dons and the corrupt politicians are only looking out for themselves and not for the people. I really like Dawn Thompson because she was a good representation of a woman fighting sexism and patriarchy. Throughout the film she shows that she is an independent woman and it not just a mother or a wife, but a human being and strong woman. 2. How do we see the political conflict portrayed in the film? Remember to use the article  Michael Manley's Vision  to help you Derrick's family belongs to the People's National Party (PNP) and lives in a garrison belonging to this party, while the gym where he trains at and characters such as Gully Rat live belong to the Jamaican Labour Party (JLP). We see the violence betw...

The Harder They Come Review

1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film? I really like the story from the film. I love antihero stories and this one is no exception. For me, Ivan Martin is a representation of Jamaica trying to find its place in the world (the film was made only 10 years after independence form Great Britain). I also love the music from the film and as mention before, with this film Jamaica introduced reggae music to the world and this really was the first Jamaican film even before there really was an industry. Something else that is really fantastic about this film is that it has a denouncement of social injustice in Jamaica. One thing that I don't like about the film is the lack of female main characters. Although, I understand that it is a film from the 70's, that doesn't mean that they could have been better and have had more female protagonism.   Other than that, I think that it is a great film and the most important Jamaican film. 2. Who is your favor...
