The Grenada Revolution Documentary

1. What is the importance of the Grenada Revolution and its influence in the Caribbean?

The Grenada Revolution was the first and only revolution in the English-speaking Caribbean.  Its short and bold experience left a mark in the Caribbean.  As we saw in the documentary, within its 4 shorts years it did more than 100 years of British colonialism!  It also inspired people throughout the world, as Maurice Bishop said "we have a dangerous appeal to the millions of black Americans" in the USA. This is because it was an English-speaking and black revolution!

2. Thinking of the poems and what you saw in the documentary, how did postcolonial identity change in Grenada?

Grenadians became really proud of who they were and of the new society they were creating. It was a real change because it was no longer the elites in power, but the people. In fact, the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) was considered a workers and farmers government and in practice we could see this throughout the documentary when we see all the people participating in the decisions of the country and building a new society. Something that was really amazing was how so many Grenadians living abroad, decided to return to Grenada to contribute to their revolution, it is really amazing to think about that.

3. What was the role of the mass organizations such as the National Women's Organization (NWO), the National Youth Organization (NYO), and the pioneers movement?

We see how the NWO really united revolutionary women in Grenada and did many good things such as organize school meals and organize the new women workforce. The NYO organized young people within the country, whether they were students or young workers. For example, Brian Beggs talked about how the mass organization change his life because before he was oppressed during the Gairy regime, but now is free. Or Phyllis Coard, president of the NWO, talked about how women were full-protagonists in the revolution just as much as the men.

4. Name 3 things that inspired you from the documentary.
